In Obihiro, located in the center of Hokkaido’s Tokachi area, you will learn about the 100-year-long history of settling in Tokachi and the close relationship between horses and people that has its roots in this history. Then you can visit the world's only Ban’ei Horse Race, which still expresses the passion of the people for their horses, and experience pioneering spirit of the locals. In the evening, take a ride in the Basha BAR for a unique way of exploring Tokachi. Stroll through the vast fields cultivated by the pioneers on the next day while reminiscing on the hardships of cultivation and tasting the fruits of the land harvested from its fields. Later, you will have a chance to listen to horse owners talk about how they still preserve the culture of horse farming and about their love for their horses, experience actual horse farming, and get a feel for the life of the pioneers in the past. The last day features a visit to the Space Exchange Centre, which is linked to the future culture of Tokachi and where you can identify with the spirit of the modern pioneers who have inherited the DNA of their ancestors. Not stopping with horses only as farm animals, in Urakawa, a "sacred place for racehorses,“ you can admire thoroughbreds running across the plains in all their glory, feed them and enjoy some time getting close to the horses. On the food side, you will enjoy Obihiro's famous pork donburi, which started as a stamina dish in the pioneering era, a barbecue with local agricultural and livestock products, fresh seafood dishes using catch directly from the Pacific Ocean fishing grounds, and even try your own hand at making pizza using 100% local wheat. Learn why it is called "gastronomy." Spend three special days immersing yourself in horse culture, gastronomy, and the pioneering spirit of the northern lands.

Lunch at Hageten - Obihiro’s specialty "Pork donburi"
(Obihiro)
Pork Donburi originates from Obihiro and consists of pork dipped in a sauce similar to eel kabayaki served on top of white rice. It was developed as stamina food for farmers and settlers who exchanged the expensive and hard to obtain eel with pork, which was readily available at the time from the thriving pig farming industry. Locals often prepare and eat this specialty at home and it is also widely served in restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

DAY2
Departure from the hotel
Itadakimasu Company
Farm Picnic
(Suburb of Obihiro City)
The Tokachi Plain is the largest crop-growing region in Japan. Originally, the volcanic ash soil was unsuitable for agriculture, but after demanding work in cultivating new land through improving the soil and cultivating vast areas using both man- and horsepower, the region became what it is now. Today, the region is expected to play a major role in providing food as Japan's breadbasket. Tokachi is known as one of Japan's most important farmland areas, and the view over its vast fields extending all the way to the horizon is truly spectacular. The tour takes you on a walk through actual production sites (farmers' fields), usually off-limits to visitors, while you listen to the field guides’ explanations and learn about food.
Lunch and pizza baking activity
at Masuya Bakery
(Obihiro)
The Tokachi area is a major wheat producer, growing a quarter of the country's wheat. Mugioto Bakery, established in 1950 and belonging to the popular local bakery Masuya, uses 100% locally grown Tokachi wheat in all of its bread. Try your hand at baking a pizza with 100% Tokachi wheat and then enjoy tasting your hand-made pizza.
Northpole Stable
Horse farming activity
(Makubetsu)
A horse-loving couple lives on this farm together with retired racehorses and horses that have nowhere else to go. See how farming with horses was done in the pioneering era in Tokachi and learn about the history of the close connection between people and horses.
Dinner and overnight stay
at Glamping Resort Feriendorf
(Nakasatsunai)
You will stay in a cottage or glamping facility in the middle of the forest. Dinner is a char-grill barbecue of local produce from the mountains, sea and fields. You can also enjoy a "Moor hot spring" and authentic Finnish sauna about a 5-minute walk away. (Depending on the season, you can also try harvesting vegetable and collecting eggs.)

Enjoy a Barfin Flounder Sashimi Meal (may not be available at certain times of the year). The barfin flounder, a high-grade fish, is found mainly along Hokkaido’s Pacific coast and nearly became extinct in the 1980s due to overfishing. Since 2006, fishermen's cooperatives and municipalities have started with the large-scale raising and release of juvenile fish in the Pacific west of Erimo to continue protecting marine resources. Enjoy the fresh local seafood that is the product of these efforts.
